What's it like to be an Agricultural Technician?
Agricultural Technicians are responsible for researching, developing and testing food and other agricultural products. They assist with setting up laboratory or field equipment required for testing and conduct experiments to improve the quality, resilience and yield of plants and animals.
Tasks and duties
- Recording experiment data.
- Collecting and collating research results.
- Collecting animal and crop samples.
- Supervising pest and weed control operations.
- Conducting surveys of insect or plant diseases.
- Measuring animal feed used in testing.
- Planning production processes including slaughtering or harvesting.
- Assisting in breeding plants and livestock to develop improved strains.
- Preparing and presenting demonstrations in agricultural settings.
- Assisting in preparing laboratory and field equipment for site testing.
Some Agricultural Technician breed animals to assist with nutrition investigations and are involved in the production and processing of food, fibre or animals. Agricultural Technicians usually assist in the collation of research findings and results. With these results and findings, they make presentations to use as a part of demonstrations.
