What's it like to be a Welfare Worker?
Welfare Workers work with people to help them improve their quality of life. They often specialise in working with adults, adolescents or families; people with alcohol and substance abuse issues; victims of domestic violence and crime; people living with disabilities, the elderly or the homeless.
Tasks and duties
- Providing counselling to victims of crime, domestic abuse or child abuse.
- Recruiting and training volunteer staff.
- Advising community support groups.
- Identifying and analysing community issues, requirements and solutions.
- Providing support and counselling to people with personal difficulties, mental illnesses, or drug and alcohol addictions.
- Establishing and administering local community groups and homes.
- Organising and leading community meetings.
- Organising community sporting, cultural and recreational events.
- Assisting people living with disabilities.
- Acting on behalf of others when lodging a formal complaint against an organisation.
The title Welfare Worker encompasses many specialist roles including Project Officers, Community Health Workers, Counsellors and Human Services Workers. Welfare Workers typically have a high level of empathy and an understanding of human psychology. They are employed by government departments and local councils, hospitals and community health centres, NGOs and community groups.

A formal qualification is usually required to work as a Welfare Worker. This may be attained at the Certificate, Diploma or university level. Specialised certifications are also available and can help you secure a role in a particular field of interest.
