Job opportunities are just that – opportunities waiting to be seized. A SEEK Profile makes the most of these opportunities by showcasing your skills, but have you done all you can to be noticed?

  • Maximise your audience. You’ve got to be in it to win it, right? If your privacy settings aren’t right, you may be invisible to employers. Choosing the ‘Standard’ setting allows registered employers to view both your profile and resume, as well as contact you directly about jobs. Being ready and available for work is also an advantage: make sure you’ve updated your availability and other relevant fields in the About your next role section.

If you’re not tied to one region, it can really open up your work prospects. By increasing your preferred work locations in the same section, you may appear in more employer searches. It not only shows that you’re willing to move for the right role, but will likely lead to a broadening of your horizons.

  • Sell yourself. Work out what sets you apart, and ensure these traits are shown where they count. Whether it’s communication skills, technical ability or highly-specific experience, emphasise them throughout your profile and resume. In your SEEK profile, the key areas to concentrate on are the Personal summary, Skills, Education and Career history sections. And remember that it’s not about repeating your key claim as often as you can - there are only so many times you can say ‘great team player’. Use the different sections in your SEEK Profile to highlight your diverse qualities and skills to potential employers.

  • Make it easy for employers. It’s not just about having the right skills and experience; employers also need to be able to find your SEEK Profile easily.

According to Stephen Veness, Projects & Operations Group Manager at Davidson Recruitment, “job seekers need to regularly update their profile on SEEK to ensure their profile remains one of the first to pop up on a search. I’d recommend doing this on a weekly basis if actively looking for work.”

Use the most common name for your job title, select the industry and sub-classification you’re looking to work in through the About your next role section, and ensure you’ve listed the skills and qualifications relevant to your field. Veness says, “candidates need to be specific about what kind of role they want, write a list of the ‘action words’ in relation to that role and ensure these appear prominently in their profile.”

Punctuality and honesty are two non-negotiables in both the recruitment process and the workplace. If you’re currently in a role, make sure your notice period (found under About your next role in your SEEK Profile) is realistic but as tight as possible – you don’t want to miss your dream job for the sake of another month of handover. To save time for all parties, make your expectations regarding hours and pay clear  and specify your seniority in the Career history area.
